Office of the Public
Defender
Persons accused of a criminal law
violation may apply to see if they qualify under state financial
guidelines for the appointment of a court-appointed attorney from
the Office of the Public Defender. When the District Attorney files
charges with the Superior Court a notice is mailed to the accused
person (called the defendant) indicating a date and time he or she
must appear for an Arraignment Hearing, at which time he or she
will plead guilty or not guilty to the charge(s). A defendant who
desires the appointment of an attorney at any stage in this process
must complete a written application. Further information regarding
the application process is available by calling the Office of the
Public Defender during the hours of 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Monday
through Friday.
